Children’s Sermon Luke 15 – Lost Things Found

A Bible Lesson for Preschoolers/Kindergarteners

Lesson Objective: Using the parables of The Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin, and the Lost Son the children will learn that God will never give up on them.

Scripture: Luke 15: 1 – 7 (Lost Sheep); Luke 15:8 – 10 (Lost Coin); Luke 15:11 – 32 (Lost Son)

Memory Verse: Luke 15:10 (NIrV): “There is joy in heaven over one sinner who turns away from sin.”

Materials:  A small stuffed animal or something else of value to you.

Before beginning the lesson, hide whatever object you have brought (a stuffed animal, your phone, your keys). The object must be something of value to you, something that the kids would know you really need to find.

Say: Oh no! I’ve lost my _______. Without it, I can’t ____________! Can you please help me? Help me look through the classroom to try and find it.

Hunt with children for the lost object. When it is finally recovered celebrate with hugs, dancing, and lots of joy!

Say: I am so glad we found my _______! It is important to me and precious to me. So important, in fact, that I would spend all day looking for it if I had to.

Do you know what? This reminds me of some stories that Jesus told. He was trying to teach some friends about how much God loves people – even people who do bad things or don’t love God back.

Jesus once told three stories about lost things: a lost coin, a lost sheep, and a lost son.

He wanted to tell these stories to teach others about how much God loves them, no matter what.

In Jesus’ day, many people thought God got angry at people who did bad things or made mistakes. They thought God punished people who sinned by giving them diseases or making bad things happen to them.

Jesus knew that this angry God was not the real God. He wanted to help people understand that God is loving and forgiving. So he told these three stories.

Here is a sample prayer that ties in with the theme of the lesson. Feel free to pray your own way.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for coming to find us and wanting to find us – even when we do wrong things. Thank you for forgiving us and letting us come back to you. Amen.
