Holiday Children’s Sermon: Valentine’s Day

Soaking up God’s Love

Materials: one Valentine card, a large, clear container filled with water, a sponge, a few clear baby food jars or Dixie cups

Scripture: 1 John 4:19

“We love because He first loved us.”

Focus: We love others because God loves us.

Prepare Ahead: Fill one large jar with water. You can keep your sponge as a rectangle or you can cut it into the shape of a heart.

Soaking Up God’s Love – Kids Church Lesson

Hold up the Valentine’s Day card and ask children to identify it. Then ask the children why we give a Valentine’s Day card (to tell someone that we love them.)

Continue on to ask children where love comes from (from the heart, because of nice things someone does, etc.) Allow for a few answers from the kids.

Share with the kids that love actually starts with God. Read 1 John 4:19.

Demonstrate this idea by getting out the large jar of water, the sponge, and the smaller jars. Explain to the children that God (represented by the jar) is full of love (represented by the water).

He created our hearts (the sponge) to be filled up with his love AND to share that love with others (represented by the small jars). On our own, we don’t really have any love to share (squeeze the dry sponge over the jars). Nothing.

We are filled with God’s love (drop the sponge in the large jar filled with water) by spending time with God in prayer, reading His word, singing praises to Him, and opening our heart to Him.

He fills us up with so much love that we can’t help but share that love with others (hold the sponge over the empty jars and give a squeeze so that the water pours into the jars).

When we run out of love – we start to get impatient, we get angry, we treat others with unkindness – we need to go back to God and fill up with his love again (return sponge to the jar and then fill up another empty jar). Without God filling up our hearts, it is impossible to love others. We love others because God loves us.

Dear God, thank you for the people in our lives you have given us to love. Help us to love them well. Help us to spend time with you and get filled up with your love so that we can spill over into others. Most of all, thank you for your love.  Amen.
