Story Outline: 1 John 5:3 – This is Love

Good morning, boys and girls! Today I want to talk to you about something wonderful! I want to talk about love!

Do you know what love is? What words do you think of when you think of love?

(Let kids shout out words.)

Hearts? Yes. Hugs? Definitely. I’m wondering when you think about love, do you ever think about… obedience?

One way that we can show love is to obey or follow rules. Think about some of the rules you have at your house.

At my house, we have a rule that you are not supposed to run in the kitchen. My wife (husband, mom, dad, etc.) made that rule, and I follow it because I love her, and following rules is one way we show our love.

It says in the Bible that love for God is keeping his commands. Do you know what his commands are?

You may have heard about them already. There are ten major commandments in the Bible that God gave to his people to follow. He has commanded us to love others, and not to hurt them, along with others.

Part of loving God is following his commandments.

But you know what the best part is? God made these commandments because He loves US, and wants us to be safe and joyful.

The reason why my wife made the rule about not running in the kitchen is that she doesn’t want me to trip and fall and hit my head on the table. She loves me and doesn’t want me to get hurt, so she made a rule for me to follow. I love her and respect her, so I obey the rule.

This is how love for God works too. He loves us and shows us how to live wonderful lives together with Him. We love him, and so we obey him. Let’s pray and thank God for loving us, and ask Him to help us love him just as much.  This Is Love!
