Scripture: Matthew 22:37-38

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.

Materials: A written grocery list.

Story Outline:

Good morning! I’m glad to see all of you here this morning! I’m glad you made it here, because today, we’re going to talk about something very, very important. I want to tell you about the time that God wrote out a list.  We will call it God’s list.

Do you know what a list is? Just in case you are not familiar with lists, I brought one with me. (Hold up your own written list.)

This is my grocery list! I wrote all of these things down before I went to the grocery store, so I could make sure I didn’t forget anything important!

As you can see, I have ten things written on my list. I have bread on my list, and I have yogurt and carrots… and a few other things, too. But there was one thing I wanted to make sure I did not forget.

I just love apples, and I eat an apple every day with my lunch, so I wanted to make sure I didn’t forget to buy them at the store. So you know what I did? I put “apples” at the very top of my list.

Do you see it up there (point to the first thing on your list.) To make sure I paid extra attention, I put it right there, in the number one slot.

Now, I don’t know if you know this, but years and years ago, God made a list for us! He had ten things on his list, too, but this wasn’t a grocery list. Do you know what kind of list it was? No?

It was a list of instructions. In the Bible, it’s called “The Ten Commandments.” Yes, now you know what I’m talking about!

When God made his list, every single thing on his list was very important, but there was one thing he wanted to make sure we didn’t forget. So you know what he did?

That’s right! He put it in the number one spot, so we would pay extra attention to it!

The instruction God put in his number one spot was this: Do not worship anyone or anything else before me. God wanted to make sure that he was the most important thing to you, so he put it at the top of his list.

So if there’s one thing that you remember, it’s to make sure you are putting God first.

This can be a hard thing to do sometimes, but whenever you are having trouble knowing how to make God #1 in your life, ask your parents or other adults in your church family, and we can talk about it! We can all work on the first item on God’s list together.
