Objective: To teach children that their words and deeds can cause good things to grow in the world… and harmful things too.

Galatians 6:7 “A man reaps what he sows.”

Materials: Seeds, and a small planter/bowl full of dirt.

Story Outline:

Gather round, gather round boys and girls! I want to show you something!

(On the stage/step, have the planter or bowl next to you, with the seed packet off to the side.)

Do you see this container of dirt? If I water it and make sure it gets some sun, something is going to grow in it! That’s right! And I can’t wait to see what it is! What do you think will grow?

A flower? Maybe! Wouldn’t that be beautiful? Beans? Ooh, I would like that.

(Wait to see if any of the children spot the seed packet. If not, nudge it a bit as a hint.)

Tomatoes? You think tomatoes are going to grow? How do you know that? Because I planted tomato seeds! That’s right! And when you plant tomato seeds, tomatoes grow! Just like if I had planted flower seeds, flowers would grow… or if I planted an apple seed, a whole tree full of apples might grow!

Did you know that you, all of you, plant seeds in your life every day? They are not the same kind of seeds I planted.

You plant invisible seeds with your words and actions.

When you tell your mom or dad or grandma or grandpa you love them, you are planting a seed. When you push or make an unkind face at a friend, you are planting a seed.

And just like when you plant a pumpkin seed, pumpkins grow, when you plant a love seed, love grows! In the same way, if you plant an unfriendly seed, unfriendliness grows.

In the book of Galatians (6:7), we learn that whatever a person plants, that’s what grows, whether it’s joy or… watermelons! Apples or… anger!

This week, pay attention to what you are planting around you and see if you can plant some love and joy, and watch it grow.

Dear Lord, Let me always keep your will in mind when planting seeds.  Amen
