Scripture: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.” John 14:27

Materials: None

Story Outline:

(As the children come up to the front, start in a standing position, with your arms at your sides.)

Good morning! Come on up! You can stay standing this morning, actually, because I want you to do something with me. Stand right there in front of me. Perfect.

I don’t know if you know this, but I’m someone who feels a lot of feelings. Do any of you have lots of feelings, lots of emotions? Yes?

What emotions do you have? Happiness? I have that feeling, too!

Sadness? Yes, I definitely feel sad sometimes. Anger, frustration? Yes,

I feel those, too! Sometimes, I also feel worried, and nervous, and excited, and disappointed, and tired. I have so, so many feelings.

Sometimes, my feelings are so strong, I don’t know what to do! Sometimes, my feelings make me feel… crazy! Do you know what I do when I have really strong feelings?

I take a deep breath, like this.

(Close your eyes and take a long, slow deep breath, opening your hands to your sides and letting the children “See” your breath by raising your shoulders and chest.)

When I take this deep breath, I ask God to come inside of me and let His peace cover my emotions when they get too strong. When I fill up my lungs with air, I imagine God’s peace filling me up, too. Try it with me.

(Take another slow, deep breath.)

Whether I’m happy or sad, mad or worried, excited or disappointed, I invite God to come in and give me his peace. God tells us in the Bible that he wants his peace to be with us.

“My peace I give you,” he says!

Taking a deep breath is my way of saying, “Thanks, God! I’ll take it!”

So remember, wherever you are, God is with you, and if you stop and take a breath, he will fill you with his peace.
