Scripture: Matthew 22:37 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Materials: A package of small cookies

Story Outline:

(Place a cookie on a plate in front of you, on your lap. Hide the rest!)

Have a seat, boys, and girls! I have a very important question to ask you!

Does anyone want this cookie?

You do? And you do, too? Okay, okay, I’ll have to choose just one person. Tommy, you can have it. But just wait for one second, okay?

(Make a great show of taking bites out of the cookie. In the end, place pieces and crumbs of the cookie that you bit off of back on the plate. Make sure it looks pretty unappetizing!)

Okay, Tommy! Here you go!

What? You wanted the whole thing? Well, I guess I can understand that. When someone promises to give you something, that’s what you expect, isn’t it? That you’ll get the whole thing?

That’s a very important lesson, isn’t it? Don’t offer a crumbled, half-eaten pieces of a cookie to someone else!

And here’s another important lesson:

Don’t offer God half-eaten pieces of your heart, either.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t love your family, or your friends, or your special toys. It just means that God asks us to love him the most!

He asks us to make him the most important thing in our lives, even when it’s hard. Just like it’s hard to give up a cookie. That’s why God sends us his Holy Spirit: to help us to do things that are really hard.

In Matthew 22:37, we are told to “Love the Lord your God will all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” And to remind you what “all” of something looks like, I would like to give you all a whole cookie! But before I do that, let’s pray, and ask God to help us to make him the most important thing in our lives, even when it’s hard.
